As a child, Jim liked playing sports but he realized he was too small and not athletic enough. He began playing the trombone in school when he was 13. Unlike many sports, he understood that being a musician was something he could enjoy for a lifetime.
While working at a restaurant he met Keith Tomes, Paul Tomes’(trumpet) brother. Keith asked Jim if he wanted join a new band he was forming that would play ska, reggae, R&B, and other genres. Jim was reluctant to join since he had only played in schools and churches. Keith quickly convinced Jim to join the band(“The Soul Capitalists”) after telling him that he would “meet women and make a little money”. Paul joined the band at the same time and they soon became friends. The band played at local clubs, parties, weddings, art galleries, fairs, and other venues. Paul and Jim played with other bands and recorded for various artists.
Jim is married to Jan Orick, who is St. Jude’s Biomedical Library director. Jim is a Portfolio Analyst for a Memphis based brokerage firm.
